This one may be a bit twisty so buckle up and be prepared to read it over a couple times…
Pretty much any type of anxiety disorder help you pursue will all agree there is typically some sort of denial, repression or suppression involved in the root of the underlying issue(s).
To really simplify the above statement…Â we are lying to oursleves in order to try and protect ourselves from the perceived danger or the feelings of fear and anxiety related to the perceived danger.
So much of panic, anxiety and fear disorders are rooted in some form of dishonesty whether with ourselves, with those in our lives or with life in general.
This is why the title of this post is potentially so powerful….
Know the truth and the truth shall set you free… This is a verse from the Bible but is one that is fairly well known even throughout secular circles.
For years I sought comfort from “being freed” from my anxiety if I was able to find the “truth”.
Unfortunately when I found what I believed to be the answer or truth to my situation I wasn’t instantly overwhelmed with a sense of freedom, calmness and tranquility.
Many times over the years I came across gems of wisdom i felt should truly “set me free”…
So what was the problem?
Was it me?
Was it the wrong “truth”
Did I not have enough faith?
Answer… none of the above.
What I now understand which has allowed me to truly experience freedom, calmness and tranquility in my heart even in the midst of very difficult and real life circumstances came from fully understanding the meaning of the word “know” as it relates to “truth” and the promised “freedom”.
The word “know” according to the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary can be a noun as in “knowledge” where it is something you possess… a thing.
However “know” can also be a verb… an action word… something you do.
In this case “know” is defined as something:
- you perceive directly
- to be acquainted or familiar with
- to have experience of
- be convinced or certain of
- to have a practical understanding of
“Know” as I believe it pertains to “know the truth and the truth shall set you free” is a verb. It is something you do, it is an action word, it requires active involvement on the part of whoever is wanting to “know” truth and wanting to experience the resulting freedom.
This is what was missing for me all these years.
I was gaining knowledge, I was learning information but I wasn’t making it my own. I wasn’t living it, I wasn’t experiencing it, I wasn’t making decisions and acting on them based on the knowledge I had gleaned.
The 7 Simple Steps to Overcome Fear and Anxiety I offer in my eBook Ease Out of Fear are truths I had learned years before they truly impacted my life.
Just simply finding, hearing, and learning these truths was not nearly enough.
The day I decided to take what I had learned… step out of my comfort zone… take a risk… and make a change was the day I truly began to experience real and lasting freedom in my life.
It’s like someone giving you tomato seeds to grow tomato plants and you simply put them in a drawer and keep checking back every so often looking for some growth.
Just knowing you have these seeds doesn’t do anything for you… simply understanding what the seeds are and what their potential is won’t put food on your table.
You need to take action… make the seeds your own… plant them… water them… provide them with sunlight and proper growing conditions and then you can honestly expect to see results.
Another example is if you wanted to learn to water ski and you took a series of classes teaching you in detail how to hold the rope, how to position the ski, where to center your weight for the best balance. In addition you read every book you could find on the subject, you visualized yourself competing in water ski tournaments, you even interviewed world famous water skiers.
Even after all that could you really say you are a waterskiier? Could you really get up out of the water and rip it up on the lake?
Is the information you have valuable and practical? Absolutely… but will it do you any good at all unless you put on a ski, get in the water, hang onto the rope and yell… “HIT IT”?
“Know” the truth requires action… it demands choices leading to movement in order to gain the promise of “freedom”.
What “truths” have you been sitting on waiting for “freedom”?
Think of even one thing you can do right now that will begin your journey down the path to “freedom”…
